Sometimes growth is measured in numbers. Sometimes it is measured in the way you work.

For Catran Naval Architects, we have recently reached an important milestone: we have changed our legal structure from an eenmanszaak (sole proprietorship) to a besloten vennootschap, or BV.

On paper, this may look like an administrative change.

For us, it represents something much bigger.

It reflects how Catran has developed since its foundation and, more importantly, where we are heading next.

From a small start to a growing network

Catran Naval Architects started with a simple idea: to provide independent, practical and high-quality naval architecture services while working closely with our clients and the wider maritime industry.

Over the years, that idea has grown.

The projects have become more diverse. Our collaborations have become more direct. We are increasingly working alongside shipyards, engineers, designers, suppliers, owners and other specialists to bring complex maritime projects together.

This development has also shaped our view of what a modern naval architecture company should be.

We do not believe that every project needs a large design office with every discipline under one roof. Instead, we believe in bringing the right people together at the right time.

That approach is now a fundamental part of how we work at Catran Naval Architects.

The move to a BV is a natural next step in that development.

Why make the change?

An eenmanszaak is often a very practical structure when starting a business. It is relatively simple to establish and manage, making it a good fit for many entrepreneurs in the early stages of their company. As a business grows, however, its structure may need to grow with it.

For Catran, the decision to establish a BV is primarily about professionalisation, continuity and creating a solid foundation for further growth.

Our projects increasingly involve multiple parties, longer development processes and larger responsibilities. We are also developing more direct collaborations with other companies and specialists.

The BV structure provides a more appropriate framework for this next phase of the business.

It gives us a stronger foundation for developing partnerships, taking on new projects and continuing to expand our network while keeping the personal approach that has always been important to us.

Of course, changing the legal structure does not change what we do.

We are still the same Catran.

The same people, the same engineering mindset and the same commitment to listening to our clients.

Professionalisation without losing the personal approach

One of the things we value most about being a small naval architecture company is the direct relationship we have with our clients.

When you work with us, you are not passed through layers of management or disconnected from the people actually working on your project.

We believe good design starts with listening.

Understanding what a client really wants, what the vessel needs to achieve and what constraints exist is just as important as the calculations, drawings and engineering that follow.

That philosophy applies whether we are working on naval architecture and marine engineering, a feasibility study, concept design, yacht interior or project management.

Professionalisation should not mean becoming less personal.

For us, it means becoming more structured, more reliable and better equipped to support our clients as projects become more ambitious.

Collaboration is becoming even more important

The change to a BV also reflects another important development within Catran: the growing importance of collaboration.

Modern vessel design is rarely the work of one discipline.

A successful project can involve naval architects, structural engineers, interior designers, CFD and FEA specialists, shipyards, equipment suppliers, classification societies, owners and operators.

Our role increasingly involves connecting these different areas of expertise and making sure they work towards the same goal.

We recently wrote about why collaboration is the missing ingredient in maritime innovation. The principle behind that article is also central to the way we are developing Catran.

The BV gives us a stronger business structure from which to build these relationships.

Looking ahead

This change is not about becoming a different company.

It is about creating the right foundation for the company Catran is becoming.

We want to continue working on interesting and challenging projects, from custom yachts and commercial vessels to innovative low-carbon maritime solutions.

We want to continue developing our expertise in naval architecture, CFD, FEA, concept design and project management.

And we want to continue building a network of people and organisations that share our belief that better vessels are created through better collaboration.

Our work is ultimately about taking an idea and turning it into something real.

A concept becomes a design.
A design becomes a vessel.
And a vessel becomes part of someone's story.

That is why our approach remains Vision to Legacy.

The legal entity may have changed.

The vision has not.

In fact, this new chapter gives us an even stronger foundation to turn that vision into a lasting legacy.
